Picture: Chris Lane Sam Goodman and Joshua Fitzpatrick look to be the next two stars off the Sutherland PCYC production line. The pair each took out their third Australian Amateur National Boxing titles in Adelaide last month. Goodman won the elite men’s 56-kilogram division, while Fitzpatrick took out the youth men’s 56kg division. It is a busy time for the duo. Sutherland’s Fitzpatrick, 17, is off to the Bahamas for the Youth Commonwealth Games in July. Goodman will leave for the US Olympic training base in Colorado Springs this week before returning for the Oceania Finals in an attempt to qualify for the World Championships in Germany. The 18-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the world titles in 2016, also has his eye on a Commonwealth Games qualifier later in the year. Sutherland PCYC coach Sean Fitzpatrick told the Leader the results were well deserved. “They were both very impressive. Sam had three fights on the way to the final and won them all. He walked through just about everyone he fought,” he said. They’re in the gym three days a week even when they’re off. They do their own strength and conditioning programs in the morning. Then they do technique work, sparring, coordination, balance. It’s full on.” The shire’s former Australian light middleweight champion Ryan Waters has also taken the boys under his wing. His experience, and the support from the community, is already proving vital. They’ve been knocking around together since they were young boys and they work so hard.- Sean Fitzpatrick “The boys have been working with Ryan and (two-time middleweight champion Daniel Geale’s trainer) Graham Shaw at Southside Boxing,” Fitzpatrick said. “Amanda Burn and the management of PCYC Sutherland, Joel Keegan, their strength and conditioning team (Steve Goodman, Jason Lussick and Alex Jaimeson), the Monty Porter Foundation who have supported Joshua throughout his development. And the guys at Longwall Chain Australia. They really couldn’t do this without them. “They’ve worked hard to go from talented boxers to amazing athletes.” Written by Andrew Parkinson. 5 May 2017, 4:30 p.m. of St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.
